The Chinese grandmaster Zhang Zhong stayed with me after Hastings 2001-2. I showed him some video material and he told the Chinese Federation of my collection. They asked if they could be supplied with material for teaching purposes. I copied most of what I then had, about 100 hours rather haphazardly. Naturally I supplied a list, which is below and has now been added to.
Both Alec Toll and I have been collecting chess material on video for some years as a minor hobby. I started off collecting the Grandmaster Video Series, but quickly gave up when I realised there were so many. Even so, I suspect I have the largest collection in the English language. This is because I have a few from the US on their system.

Luzhin Defence. This film is based on the Vladimir Nabokov
book. Technical consultant Jon Speelman.
Most Dangerous Match. A Columbo detective TV drama
Knight Moves 1992. A feature film thriller made in Canada

Harrison Bergeron. A witty TV film with some chess.
Grass Arena. A TV film with a drunk’s rehabilitation
aided by his playing chess.
Fresh. A US film about a 12 year old pushing pawns and drugs.
Chess Player. Feature length silent film

the Unexpected Series. I was the chess advisor.

Life with Louie. The Masked Chess Boy. This 21 minute American
cartoon explores the problems of a child who does not want to be regarded as
a chess nerd. It is very funny, though somewhat didactic at the conclusion.
Three Moves to Freedom A 1950s feature film with Curt Jurgens
and Claire Bloom.
Dangerous Moves, original name Le Diagonal de Fou This undeservedly
won the Oscar for best foreign language film in 1985 it is about a World Championship
Benson an episode featuring a young chess prodigy. There is
virtually nothing about chess in this
Uncovered 1994. A movie based on ‘The Flanders Panel’
In the Open a rather odd story about friends playing in a weekend
Swiss in the US. The USCF comes out of it rather well
The West Wing, Third Season, Hartsfield’s Landing. Reference
is made to President Bartlett being a chess master in several episodes. In this
one he gives a simul against staff members. They couldn’t have taken much
notice of the chess consultant! In a later episode his ability to play chess
is taken as a marker for whether his mind has deteriorated.
Knights of Harlem with Ted Danson. Oddly named this, almost
all the action takes place in the Bronx.
Hatley High For once it isn’t American Football with
which the High School is besotted, but chess.
