A message from the ECF Manager of Coaches

From the Junior Director
“The current list of ECF Accredited Coaches should develop to provide players, parents and schools with information relevant to the question, ‘Which coach is right for me?’  I fully support this project and look forward to reading your comments on its merits and a sensible implementation plan.”
Please provide comments to David Levens at david@chesscoach.co.uk

February 2012

I learnt to play chess at the age of 10 from a book of hobbies – nobody in my family played! By the time I was 17 I was thought good enough to be considered for the England U18 team and was invited to play in a weekend tournament in Coventry. Unfortunately I was already at work, doing an apprenticeship in Radio and TV engineering and was not allowed the time off to compete. The eventual team was Rumens, Hollis, Mabbs and Hindle I never played Hollis but had respectable results against the other three.

Subsequently I competed in three British Championships (Leicester 1960, Bath 1963 an Whitby 1964) and the Hastings Challengers in, I think, 1970. However, I realised while competing in Whitby that I would never realise my dream of becoming an IM when I had a young family to bring up and a burgeoning career to consider. By 1971, when my grade had declined to 181 from a high of at least 199, I quit and did not play seriously again for another 25 years. In the meantime I played a lot of sport: player manager for a local amateur football team; some village cricket; and some league squash. I also took up distance running in my forties, completing 22 marathons, mostly well under 3 hours each, and qualified as an athletics coach.

What I learned from my sporting activities is that almost every other serious sport insists on having trained and QUALIFIED coaches!! Even if you are an Olympic Gold medallist you are still expected to QUALIFY as a coach; if you were once a professional, International footballer you are still expected to gain your coaching badges BEFORE you are offered a management post for a professional football team. Moreover, nobody in football assumes that because you were once a first class player that you will automatically make a first class manager/coach.

What I plan to do is put in place a proper scheme to produce our own trained and qualified coaches. Broadly speaking I would like to see the following categories of qualified coaches: Basic Coach – someone qualified to coach children and others up to about 75 grade; Class 3 coach – someone qualified to coach up to about 100 grade; Class 2 coach – someone qualified to coach up to about 125/130 grade; Class 1 coach – someone qualified to coach up to about 150/160 grade. After that we would have our usual list of FMs, IMs and GMs but I would ask them to provide us all with their coaching qualifications, if any – for instance, a FIDE trainers qualification. Not having such a qualification would not bar anyone from the list, but parents and others looking for a coach would at least have some idea of what they are getting. Coaches would also be invited to have their fees published. What I am trying to do is to have a published list of coaches that provides as much relevant information as possible, for the benefit of the paying public!

Finally, I believe that a proper scheme would encourage more people to come into coaching. Those already actively coaching and who can show a level of success should, I believe, be automatically given the appropriate “badge.” This offer would remain in place for one month from the instigation of the scheme. After that everybody will have to qualify to get on the ECF list of coaches.

I welcome comments from active coaches and would be willing to organise a meeting or series of meetings for open debate. We need to all be singing from the same hymn sheet!
