National Club Handicap Rapidplay, 23 April 2006

This year's competition was held once again at Magdalen College School, Oxford on Sunday 23th April and was sponsored by Clever Cloks Products. 12 teams of 4 entered, so fortunately the need for a bye was avoided. There were 5 rounds, with each player having 20 minutes to complete the game. The teams were paired according to scores. At the end of the event placings were determined taking account of handicaps based on average grades using the system devised by Cyril Johnson.

Final places, showing handicap adjustments:

Place (prize) Team Grade Score & Handicap Overall score
1st (£200) Cowley 1 149.75 15½ - 1 14½
2nd (£120) Clevedon 138 11½ + 1 12½
3rd (£60) Magdalen College School 109.5 8 + 4 12
4th = Cowley 2 137 10 + 1 11
4th = Milton Keynes & OU 1 156.5 12 - 1 11
6th St Albans 159.5 11½ - 1 10½
7th Milton Keynes & OU 2 125.75 8½ + 1
8th = Crowthorne 102.25 5 + 4 9
8th = Syston 105.5 5 + 4 9
10th = Oxford City 163.75 12½ - 4
10th = Wanstead 145 9½ - 1
12th Emsworth 165.25 11 - 4 7

Cowley 1 (ranked 5th) needed no help from the handicap system! They beat Syston 4 - 0 in round 1 and Wanstead 3½ - ½ in the second. Then they relaxed merely beating the higher graded Milton Keynes team 2½ - 1½ before dispatching Clevedon 3½ - ½. Three points ahead at the start of the last round, they held off a challenge from the highly graded Oxford City team drawing 2 - 2. Congratulations to the Cowley 1 team for a remarkable achievable. Mike Flatt controlled, Tim Thurstan was the arbiter and Goeff Kendall took the entries. An enjoyable day was had by all and I hope to run the event again next year at the same venue.
