National Club Championships 2006/7 - Major Section

Welcome

A warm welcome to this year's competition and particularly to Alwoodley entering the Major for the first time. Also to our ' regular customers ' who keep coming back every year !

This year you will note some changes; in particular please note that the penalty for going over the average grading limit is the loss of the match. Also please note that playing an ungraded player without clearing it with the controller may also incur sanctions.

My other 'worry' relates to disabled or handicapped players. I suspect I have to include the information because of the Disability Discrimination Act and other considerations. It seems to me that the information is directed more at congress organisers, but the rules seem to contradict themselves on the question as to whether there is an obligation on home teams to accommodate a visiting player with disabilities, or whether they merely have to do their best. On the whole I incline to the latter view. If there is an obligation, then it could cause problems with last minute substitutes. Obviously we all want disabled players to be able to play, but I can see problems here and I think the rules must be interpreted with common sense. The thought that struck me was this - if you have a player you may wish to include who has a disability, you could perhaps let me know, anonymously, of the nature of the disability. If your club premises might present problems for disabled access, you could let me know and I will try and avoid a pairing that might give rise to difficulties.

These games are to be completed no later than Sunday 17 December 2006. In view of the delay in sending out the draw, I will be sympathetic to requests to extend this date by a few weeks if it difficult or impossible to play the match before December 17.

Can I remind you that the captain of the team having the home draw is required by the Rules to offer the visiting team a choice of three dates, one of which must be a Sunday, within seven days of receiving the notice of pairing, that is on or before Sunday 5 November. If this does not happen the visiting captain should contact me immediately, don't wait.

Gradings

References in the Rules to grading of players refer to the current BCF/ECF List. For the benefit of new entrants, please note that the aggregate grade of the players in your team cannot exceed 799. 800 takes you over the limit. Also, a grade of 199 for any individual player is acceptable ; 200 is not. You will notice there is a minimum grade of 110. Players below this grade are eligible, but for the purpose of calculating the average grade they will be deemed to be graded 110. For players whose names do not appear in the current ECF List, I am required by the Rules to allocate a grade - see Notes on Interpretations. Also, please note you need my specific authority to play an ungraded player on Board One.

Results

The best way of keeping abreast of results is through the SCCU or ECF Websites. I try to post these when received and it is not by any means unknown for this to happen on the day of the match. Please note, it helps me if I have both scoresheets; I have to send one in for grading purposes.

Any questions ?

If you have any queries, please do not hestitate to contact me.

Good luck

Mike McNaughton
