The King’s School occupies most of the buildings in Pitt Street, whch is just behind Gloucester Cathedral. The tournament will be held in the main hall, which is reached via the Junior School entrance in Pitt St. There is also a side entrance direct from the rear car park.
Directions from the M5 motorway.
Leave the motorway at junction 11 (junction 11A is also possible if approaching
from the South), and follow the signs to Gloucester Cathedral. It is about 6
miles from the motorway. After several roundabouts, the road goes into a dip
and underneath two bridges - a pedestrian bridge and a railway bridge. Immediately
after the bridges, turn left into Priory Road, and follow it round till it becomes
Gouda Way. At the start of Gouda Way there is a pedestrain crossing controlled
by lights, and immediately after the crossing on the right is the entrance to
the King’s School car park.
If you get lost, park anywhere in Gloucester (it is free on Sundays), and make for the cathedral, which can easily be seen from most parts of the city centre. Pitt Street is immediately behind the cathedral.
Motorists using the M4 and A417/419 via Cirencester will pick up the signs to Gloucester Cathedral on approaching the city.
Directions from the railway station.
The King’s School is a few minutes walk from the station. Follow signs
to the cathedral. Pitt Street is behind the cathedral.
The Harry Potter connection.
Anyone who has seen the recent Harry Potter film may recognise the Cathedral
and the School Hall from scenes in the film.
What’s the basic idea?
1) To ensure that all teams have a fair chance at winning one of the competitions.
The team that plays the most above its grade on the day will win.
2) The handicap is based on the variation from the expected score for each team based on the grade of the opposition faced.
3) Shown below is the expected score for teams based on a 12-board match.

4) For the handicap competition the expected score is subtracted from a team’s score. If a team is expected to win 9-3, but only wins 8-4, then they score –1 and their opponents score +1.
Example: Team A with average grade of 150 plays Team B with average grade 195. The grading difference is 45, so the expected score is ½-11½. If the actual result is 2-10, then the handicap result is +1½ for team A, and –1½ for team B.
5) The winner is the team with the most positive score at the end of the 4 rounds, the scores from each round being additive.
What do team captains have to do?
Team lists should be submitted as early as possible, and no later than 12.30pm
on the day (the night before by e-mail would be preferred). Grading to be based
on, in order of precedence - the latest published BCF Rapidplay, the latest
published BCF Longplay, best estimate by the Team Captain.
What are the Controllers doing?
Grading information is obtained from team lists handed in at the start of the
competition. We will need to agree any estimated grades with the team captain
and will take account of any available information from the BCF master list.
Team Captains should have worked out the average grade for their team. We will
check this. Note we reserve the right to alter a team’s mean grade if
we think any over-creative use of substitutes has occurred. The Controller’s
decision on any aspect is final.
