The 1st English Senior Chess Championship has been declared a success even before a move has been made at the board. The Championship, for players aged over 60 years, commences at the Izaak Walton Hotel, Dovedale, on Monday 28th January and continues till Friday 1st February.
ECF Chief Executive Martin Regan stated at the event launch last year “I am delighted we have secured such a fine venue. It promises to be a top class event in fantastic surroundings.” However the Federation's initial hopes for the Championship have been exceeded with an entry of 51 top Senior players including international master Andrew Whiteley, current British Senior Champion David Anderton, postal chess grandmasters Keith Richardson and Mike Singleton and a host of other high rated players.
Event organiser Neil Graham said “This is the strongest Senior event ever held in Great Britain and promises to be a closely contested competition for the first prize of £1,025 and a total fund of nearly £2,500.”
Play commences on Monday at 1:00pm and continues with a game each day. Spectators are welcome.
