When
it rains it pours. Never has it been truer than in Siebnik, Croatia when Round
6 was accompanied by extremely wet and windy conditions. I felt this should
give the English players the home-turf advantage but the Croatians, in a brilliant
move, maintained a hellish heat in the playing hall. Maybe we should complain
about the unfairness!
Roy was out first with a draw in a very evenly matched game. Also out was Peter with a draw in a match which he thought had some interesting possibilities in the end-game. Then imagine my shock when I saw that the next person to finish was Subin. After having brought up the rear on most of the other games, he decided to call this one an early draw after his opponent pulled out an unexpected move in the opening.
Amisha was finished shortly afterwards with a win, which puts her at 3 ½ and leading the English team. Her opponent unexpectedly entered Amisha’s Sicilian Dragon and Amisha overwhelmed her with a much better knowledge of the opening. A good result.
Katie had a good game but unfortunately lost and this was followed closely by Anjali and Craig both also reporting losses. All played good games but a combination of bad luck and superior experience from their opponents accounted for the losses. Callum was also out with a loss but after analysing the game it was found that his opponent had pulled out a brilliant sacrifice to secure a better position. Not really much one can do when your opponent pulls such moves out of the bag.
Peter was a hero today as he drew against an IM who not only had a lot more experience but also had a significantly higher rating. That encounter itself should send large amounts of rating points his way.
