Round 9

Thursday, 9th August 2007. Day breaks, but not early enough for some (Whooooo, Whooooooo!). Breakfast has been brought forward to 07:30 as the final round kicks off at 08:30. I thought yesterday was bad, but now we are talking seriously sleepy faces!! But before you can say “Anyone for tennis?” the cars are revving up and the bikes are lined up ready for the trip to the venue for the final round. Suddenly the end is here, and the mind-boggling efforts of the Players – effectively equivalent to undertaking an A-Level exam every day for 9 days – comes to a conclusion. But enough waffle. Cut to the photos!

Coaching took place last night, 20:40 through to 22:30. It’ll be amazing if any of the little blighters are awake for the whole round, never mind winning their games!

And now the Chess bit:

Danny receives the EU U12 Champion Trophy - click for larger imageIt is the U12s, what can I say? Danny gains a slight advantage after 13 moves encouraging Mark Lapidus to offer a draw. Danny accepts, becoming EU Youth U12 Chess Champion in the process!

The cheer at prize-giving brought the house down! Well done Danny!

No time a game of the round, please do download the pgn bulletin from the official tournament site and PYO!

The huge thanks of all the Players and their parents go to Mr and Mrs Turner for leading the England Party so well. The Players’ many, many thanks go to their coaches who worked long and hard in preparing their Players for each round. And the number of times the coaching paid off directly the same day makes Neil’s musings back on Day 1 seem laughable. Well done, coaches, thanks for your efforts to help our children, and I hope you enjoyed it too.

And finally…

Brian teaser 7a – We (Danny Hunt) have found another 10 letter word on the top line of letters on a standard keyboard: “Proprietor”. Did you do better?

Brain teaser 8 – Keyboard again – The sentence secretaries used for speed practice which included every letter of the alphabet: “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.”

As for me? Well, I haven’t had the courage to tell Mr Chips yet, so am doing it in writing as I do not think he’ll see this until I am safely back home - but “I cannae take no more, Cap’n” to paraphrase Scottie from Start Trek. I have enjoyed writing these reports and hope that I have managed to bring the tournament a little bit to life for those of you watching from afar. Thanks for your feedback, and yes the typos were deliberate…

BYEEEEEEEEE !!!!
