FIDE Qualification Commission

There was a meeting of the Counsellors to the QC in London on the 13th and 14th September. The other participants were: Mikko Markulla (Chairman, Finland); Nick Faulks (Secretary Bermuda); Werner Stubenwohl (Austria); Andrzej Filipowicz (Poland). Nick also has a London home and, at my suggestion the others stayed in the Staunton Hotel which is where our meetings also took place. We went for dinner to Simpson’s in the Strand, so the whole occasion resonated with chess.

The QC primarily concerns itself with the FIDE Rating and Title Regulations. The main thrust of the meeting was to discuss the agenda items for the FIDE Congress which will take place in Krakow, starting 15th October. One particular new venture we have been asked to consider is the re-introduction of rating rapidplay games and a completely new blitz list
