BCF Grading: Some Data from the 2000/1 Grading Master List

Chris Majer reports:

In idle moments from more serious work on Grading, I have been playing with last season's Grading Master list and have produced the data shown below, which may or may not be of interest. I had intended to produce some nice pretty graphs, but with other pressures have not got round to it. In due course, I may update the tables with some graphs and will certainly look at the new Grading list after publication in August.

1) Grading Histogram

How good are you in comparison to the rest of England's chess players? The following table shows the playing strength of the chess playing population, based on the 11,087 A-E category players. The mean grade is 113 and the median grade 115.

2) Grading Changes?

Did you, like me, have a bad season last season? Perhaps the following table provides comfort in the thought that there were people that lost more Grading points than you or me? Alternatively, see this as a challenge for improvement. Data based on players who had an A-E category Grade in both seasons.
