The first Coulsdon rapidplay of the new season attracted a total field of 38 players. The Open and Under 170 were merged whilst the other sections stood by themselves.
Overall winner of the top section was International Master Colin Crouch, who registered 2 draws in his 5 out of 6; but it could have been so different had Coulsdon junior James Foster converted his winning position instead of losing on time. Returning Redhill Chess Club player Dan Bisby took 2nd place with 4.5 along with Coulsdon & Beckenham's Ian Snape. Within the field, there were also 3 prizes for the Under 170 players: Tim Rogers being the winner having scored 4 out of 6 and Chris Clegg of Kingston behind him on 2.5. Three players tied for 3rd.
Paul Jackson (Coulsdon) and Selvar Somupillai of Wimbledon ran away with the Under 140 section; the latter slowing up in the last couple of rounds allowing the former to catch him and share 1st place. Coulsdon's Andrew Mant was 3rd. Glory for Gerald Tredinnick in the Under 100 with 5.5 out of 6, winning from 3 players on 4 points (David Everitt of Haywards Heath, Richard Stokes of Peterborough and Jeff Fleischer of Coulsdon). I should note whilst on the Under 140 section that CCF was delighted to see the return of Jessica Thilaganathan to CCF events following her accident whilst she was playing in the Easter Congress here.
The Under 80 section was a husband and wife clean-up. John Constable won it with 5 out of 6. He only lost 1 game and that was to his wife Chris who finished 2nd on 4.5. Grant Curry of Haywards Heath finished 3rd.
