Obituary: Vernon Dilworth was born in 1916 and died in October 2004. He lived much of his life in Cheshire.
He mainly played correspondence chess, but did return to over-the-board play in 1972, playing for example in the Evening Standard Congress.
He is most famous for the eponymous Dilworth Variation in the Ruy Lopez, which is typified by 11...Nxf2. Relatively few 20th century figures have given their name to a chess variation.
He first analysed it in an early 1940s CHESS magazine and Botvinnik must surely have seen this material as he played the line in 1943. More recent players include Leko, Yusupov and Susan Polgar.
Leonard Barden told me Vernon spent a long time discussing his line with him at the Evening Standard Congress. Our condolences to his family.

The 29th Chorley Chess Congress will for this year take place at Parklands High School, Southport Road (A581). Parklands High School is just 5 minutes walk from the regular Town Hall venue. Southport road runs along side the Town Hall and parking is free at the school.
This relocation is due to the installation of lift facilities at the entrance to the building during the end of August. This will improve access facilities for future years.

Chess - The Musical: Production runs this week (14-17 July) at The Wycombe Swan Theatre, High Wycombe, Bucks - tickets for Wednesday night are 2 for the price of 1, call the Box Office on 01494 512 000. This highly acclaimed musical develops the ancient and distinguished game of chess into a metaphor for romantic rivalries and East-West political intrigue. The principal pawns form a love triangle: the loutish American Grandmaster, the earnest Russian champion, and the Hungarian-American female chess second, who arrives at the international championships with the American but falls for the Russian. From Tyrol to Thailand the players, lovers, politicians, CIA and KGB make their moves to the pulse of this monumental rock score. Several numbers, including "One Night in Bangkok" and "I Know Him So Well", are international hits. [13/7/04]

The radio play 'Chess Wars' was broadcast on Radio 4 on Friday 9 July at 9pm. This hour-long play was a dramatisation of the events concerning the Fischer-Spassky Match in Reykjavik in 1972. If you missed it you can access it via the Internet at www.bbc.co.uk/radio4.
Does anybody have recording of the weekly chess programmes from the 1950s that Bob Wade appeared on? Some of you may have read the excellent book, 'Chess Treasury of the Air.' That is based on material from the programme. The consultation game of Leonard Barden + Bobby Fischer against Peter Clarke + Jonathan Penrose was excellent. 26 June to 2 July 5th Marseilles Open, Glenn Flear scored 6/9.
27 June to 4 July Naujac-sur-Mer France, the 7th Wines of Medoc Tournament. Jovanka Houska scored 6/9 to come 8-12th. Had she won the event her prize would have been her weight in fine wines.
3-9 July La Frere. Gary Quillan scored 6.5/9, not too good. This was a rating performance of 2265 against his rating of 2323.
3-15 July Brno, Czech Republic. Ben Savage scored 5.5/9 finishing second equal. His rating is 2204, his performance 2404. That should be good enough to secure him some votes in the BCF Player of the Year poll next year.

World Chess Championship 2004: Sadly Michael Adams lost the first game of the rapidplay two game blitz match with the White pieces. He secured some pressure, but then seemed to lose his way. Eventually he blundered a piece badly. In the second game he had the uphill battle of trying top win with Black, never an easy task at the best of times. Rustam played the Exchange Ruy with which he had been so successful earlier in the match. This opening has the reputation of starving Black of winning chances. Michael succeeded only in making the endgame somewhat complicated. Eventually they agreed a draw when there was no play left at all. Thus Rustam Kasimdzhanov is the new FIDE World Champion. So near and yet so far. One has to hand it to the younger man. The Uzbek came through a fearsome field and kept his head when all about him lost theirs at some stage or other.

5th European Chess Championships, Antalya – Belek Justiniano Hotels: 5th European Championship started with 10 minutes delay?! Yesterday night after 11 oclock in Hotel everybody was dancing, drinking and relaxing for the 1st round. Nobody has problem and all was going very well. Then an unexpected accident happened. The energy building of the hotel, which is 100 metres far from the main building exploded! It was at 12:00 oclock midnight. Belek Fire Brigade accessed to Hotel in 2 minutes. Fire is put out in 45 minutes and the energy building was covered by ashes and water in very bed shape. What to do then? It was 2 oclock after midnight and there were only 13 hours to start the round. General Secretary of TCF, Mr.Recep Sahin was on duty there. He managed to call the night shift of Antalya City Electricity Administration. Technicians and engineers came to hotel in ten minutes not to save turists there, but to start the round at the time. They managed to give tournament hall all electricity we need at 14:30 afternoon just 30 minutes before round. We started the round 15:10 by local time without any problem. Now everything in order. Boards, air condition in playing area, coffe and tea breaks, lights and fantastic players...Everything under control, except the moves...
