The Annual Charity Tournament and Presentation of Trophies of the Leicestershire & Rutland Chess Association took place at Syston on 22 September. The Charity Blitz Chess event in aid of Loros was well supported with 17 teams entering. The event was controlled by Jim Miller, the new league secretary with the assistance of Cyril Johnson, his predecessor.
The winners with a maximum score of 20 pts were Oakham School I thus winning the BTH Smith trophy. The remaining teams were Wigston I with 14, Braunstone I, Oakham II, Syston I and Wigston II all on 11 pts, Littlethorpe II and “Dragons” a composite team on 10½, Hinckley II and Ashby on 10, Littlethorpe I and Thurnby on 9½, Loughborough on 9, Hinckley I on 7½, Syston II on 6, Oakham III on 5½ and Braunstone II on 4. Syston I were adjudged to be the winners of the Harry Tharp Cup for the handicap event. The real winners were Loros for whom the sum of £90.00 was raised. Julie Johnson, the MCCU Chief Executive Officer, who was present, made two announcements.
There would be an inaugural Midlands Cup Handicap Rapidplay at Syston on December 5th and at a board meeting of the BCF the previous weekend, Cyril Johnson had been elected as a BCF Arbiter.
