Due to clashes with several high profile tournaments, entries for this event were down from the normal 130s to just 76 entrants - however that was all the better for those people that did turn up as they took advantage of the increased and guaranteed prizes always offered by Richmond Rapidplays.
The Open saw an exciting change in the prize structure, with a guaranteed £50 grading prize on offer for the top player graded Under 200. Donny Muter took this with an admirable 4 out of 6, his finest victory over 3Cs' Stephen Gordon. Joint winners in the Open were Jovica Radovanovic and Peter Taylor, both scoring 4.5 out of 6.
The key factor about the top prizewinners in the Major was that they all went through the day unbeaten. Jinwoo Song clinched first place though as he only conceded two draws, compared to Peter Morton and Richmond Junior Tim Seymour who both had three. U140 Grading Prizes were won by Dominic Bennett and Robin Huq.
The Intermediate was very hotly contested, Jimmy Jiang taking first place outright on 5 out of 6, but closely followed five players all just half a point behind him. As there were so many people on the same points, the U100 grading prize was also incorporated into the second prize. Dan Donohoe, Peter Lord and Richmond Juniors Jacob Cohen-Setton, Valentin Gaudeau and Khalid Kamara all finished on 4.5 out of 6.
Finally onto the Minor and a smash-and-grab show from Coulsdon coaches Christine and John Constable. The key to this came in Round 5 when Christine beat her husband, putting her on a maximum score and she took a draw in the last round to win the section on . John bounced back from his loss to win his final round and still take second place on 5 out of 6. Andrew Gillard took third place with four and a half points, and then five players shared fourth and fifth places - they were Mark Lewis, Robert White and Richmond Juniors Alasdair Marshall, Gideon Gray and Joshuaa Pineda. Once again because there were so many people sharing this, the grading prize was also incorporated into this.
This Rapidplay was the second of six in the Richmond Rapidplay Grand Prix 2004-05 which rewards people for good performances relative to their grade throughout the season. Current leaders are Robin Haldane in the 150+ section, Jinwoo Song in the 101-150, Jacob Cohen-Setton in the 51-100 and Arnav Ahuja in the 50 and under. Winners of each section will receive £100 at the end of the year.
The next Richmond Rapidplay is on Sunday January 9th. Other remaining rapidplays this season that go towards the BCF Grand Prix (Double Points) and Richmond Grand Prix are Sunday March 6th, Sunday May 8th and Sunday July 3rd. Full Grand Prix scores so far are available on www.rjcc.org.uk.
