The 55th Richmond Rapidplay at the White House Community Association on September 26th saw 107 people taking part.
The Open had it's usual quota of 5 IMs taking part, with Robert Gwaze IM once again coming first on 5 out of 6, conceding just two draws in the last two rounds. Richard Bates IM and Graeme Buckley IM came joint second with Charles Tippleston, whose shadow grade of 168 would seem rather inaccurate bearing in mind that he drew with the four IMs that he played. Robin Haldane won the U195 Grading Prize on 3.5/6.
The next Richmond Rapidplay will see an exciting change in the Open, as a guaranteed U200 Grading Prize of £50 will be offered on top of the £100 and £75 already on offer.
On to the Major, and Hendon's Helge Hjort scooped the top prize, mirroring Gwaze in the Open as he too finished on 5 out of 6 and only conceded two draws in the last two rounds. Peter Morton took second place alone on 4.5 out of 6, with numerous people picking up the U140 Grading Prize on 4 out of 6.
The Intermediate was taken by storm by an ungraded Kenyan player called Sajid Nurmohamed who scored 6 out of 6. However because we had no grading information for him, it was decided that he was clearly too strong for the section as he won all his games and therefore was only entitled to win £25. This meant that the surplus £50 was distributed amongst the other prizewinners.
Richmond Junior Yang-Fan Zhou had his £50 for second place increased to £75. Third placed Ben Cameron, Jack Harding and Jessica Thilaganathan all won prizes, with the first two also sharing the U100 Grading Prize.
Finally the Minor as usual saw the largest entry of the four sections. Timothy Powell won this scoring 5.5/6, only dropping a draw to Richmond Junior Jacob Cohen-Setton, who finished joint second with Quan Zhou on 5/6. Three players shared fourth and fifth prizes, on 4.5 out of 6, and they were Alex Brett, John Constable and Thanurshan Mahenthran. U60 Grading Prizes were scooped by Fred Coombes, Christopher Dunne and Richmond Juniors Alastair Freeman and Rudi Narendran.
This Rapidplay was also the first of six to be included in the 2004-05 Richmond Grand Prix. The rules are that if you have an established grade (not shadow or estimated) then your grading performance for each tournament minus your grade will give you your Richmond Grand Prix score. Top scorers at the end of the season in each grading band will scoop £100 each. Full rules are available on www.rjcc.org.uk - please note that negative scores will count as 0.
The 56th Richmond Rapidplay takes place on Sunday October 31st. There is also a Richmond Junior Congress, which is a London Junior Chess Championships Qualifier, on November 7th at the same venue.
