Bolton Easter Congress, 25-27 March 2005

83 competitors attended the event, which was held at the Excel Centre, Bolton.

In the Open section the highest rated player, Stephen Gordon (221), suffered a setback in the second round when he lost to Martyn Goodger (184, Ely). This left the way open for second seed Jeff Horner (207) to lead by a clear point, on 4/4, entering the last round. Stephen, who had scored 3/4, played white against Jeff in the final round and won a titanic encounter. The only other player on 3/4 was Mike Surtees (187) who could only manage a draw, with black, against Brett Lund (197, Preston), which left Stephen and Jeff as joint winners.

Luke Boumphray and David Adam won the Major and Knights sections.

In the Busy persons 10 minute blitz tournament a random draw was used and top seeds Stephen Gordon and Jeff Horner met in round 2. Jeff won with black and ran out tournament winner with 7½/8.
