England Teams announced for European Team Championships
ENGLAND TEAMS, EUROPEAN TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP, GOTHENBURG
JULY 29 to AUGUST 8, 2005

The England teams selection has been confirmed for the European Team Championship in Gothenburg. The England Teams will include an array of impressive talent, featuring many of the country’s top players. Selection is:

Men’s team

Board 1 Luke McShane – renowned chess prodigy, silver medal winner in the World Junior Championships 2002. Also, twice winner of the prestigious Lausanne Young Masters Event.

Board 2 Jon Speelman – Former World Championship candidate and three times British Champion.

Board 3 Danny Gormally – England’s newest Grandmaster achieving his title in Gibraltar this year.

Board 4 Peter Wells (Captain) – Author and Trainer and Seasoned Grandmaster with wide experience and a terrific tournament pedigree.

Board 5 Nick Pert – One of our most promising young Grandmasters. World under-18 Champion in 1998.

Women’s team

Board 1 Jovanka Houska (Captain) – England’s latest International Master, the only English Woman to have qualified for the Women’s Chess World Championship 2006. Winner of the European Girls Under 20 in 2000,

Board 2 Susan Lalic – Experienced Teacher and the first ever female International Master in England, bronze medallist in the European Chess Team Championship 2001.

Board 3 Heather Richards – Talented Woman’s International Master with a vast experience in International tournaments. Regular member of the Olympiad team.

Board 4 Ingrid Lauterbach – England’s most active Woman’s International Master with some great tournament results. Frequent member of the National Team.

Board 5 Jessie Gilbert – The youngest member of the team and one of England’s most promising juniors. Women’s World Amateur Champion 1999

The England teams’ performances have been notably successful in the past with a crowning achievement in Pula, Croatia in 1997 when the men’s team won the gold and the women’s team won the bronze. Unfortunately, sponsorship for the national team has not been forthcoming to date.
