Frome Congress, 6-8 May 2005

Estd. 1990, British Championships Qualifier, BCF Grand Prix Event, Somerset County Championships

On May 6th to 8th the Sixteenth Frome Chess Congress was held at Selwood Middle School. 190 players entered and winners were:

Open :-
First prize was shared between Chris Beaumont (Clifton), Peter Chapman (Downend), David Sully (Pentyrch) and Michael Yeo (Lymington) on 4/5. Peter Chaplin and David Sully qualified for the 2005 British Championships with Michael White and Chris Rice as first and second reserve. The under 160 grading prize was won by Joshua Hall (Brown Jack) and David Littlejohns (Taunton) on 3 points.

Major (U155):-
First place was shared between M. Abbot (Exmouth), R. Clegg (Huddersfield), B. O’Gorman (DHSS), D. Wood (Glastonbury) on 4/5. The Under 131 grading prize was shared by M. Steevens (Bridport) and P. Smith (Knoll Knights) on 3 points.

Intermediate (U125):-
First place was shared by P. Tew (Cardiff) and Duncan Macarthur (Keynsham) on 4.5/5 ahead of S. Herbert (Forest of Dean), I. Brooke (Oxford City), W. Taylor (Sedgemoor) and M. Worrall (Taunton) on 4/5. The Under 105 grading prize was shared between M. Richards (Newquay), A. Papier (Bristol & Clifton) and N. Wilcox (Downend & Fishponds) on 3.points.

Minor (U100):-
First place was won by Katie Hale (Millfield) on 5/5 ahead of Tim Taylor (Sedgemoor) 0n 4.5/5 and D. Helbig (Keynsham), R. Jervis (Sedgemoor) and H. Welch (Seaton) on 4/5. Trevor Stacey and R. Adams (both Gillingham & Shaftesbury) shared the Under 75 Grading prize 0n 3 points, whilst Bob Downing (Bristol & Clifton) and Stuart Hay (Wiltshire), shared the prize for ungraded players with 3.5 points.

Somerset trophies were won by: Peter Chaplin in the Open (Somerset Champion/ Denys Bonner Trophy), Dave Wood in the Major (Leon York Memorial Trophy), Duncan Macarthur in the Intermediate (Roy Hossell Trophy) and Katie Hale in the Minor (Cyril Chapman Trophy). .

Katie Hale also won the Cuprinol Junior Trophy (Highest scoring West of England Junior in any section). Downend won the team competition.
