16th Nottinghamshire Rapidplay, 20 February 2005

The 16th Nottinghamshire Rapidplay was again held at Nottingham High School, which proved to be a popular venue with all competitors.
Due to an unfortunate clash with another event in the area, entries were considerably lower than last year, but the total entry of 90 competitors made for strong competition in all sections.

In the OPEN section (14 competitors) the absence of any competing GM's or IM's ensured a close contest throughout, and first place was eventually shared between 2 players who each scored 4.5/6 and won £85 each. Third place was a three-way tie on 4/6.

The MAJOR section, for players graded below 155 (18 competitors) was also a very hard-fought affair and, after suffering a setback in round 3, local player Janos Wagenbach of Mansfield came through to win with 5/6 and winning the £100 first prize. Dave Brown of Long Eaton was a clear second with 4.5/6 winning £70 and four players shared 3rd with 4/6.

The INTERMEDIATE section, for players graded below 120 (25 competitors) proved to be fiercely competitive and first place was eventually shared between two players with 5/6, Simon Wells (Ashfield) and Robert Clegg (Huddersfield) who won £85.00 each.
David Turner of Bottesford took third place on his own with 4.5/6, winning £50.

The MINOR section, for players graded below 90 (33 competitors) saw Richard Leaper of Birmingham University win a fluctuating contest with 5.5/6 to scoop the £100 first prize. Keith Burrett (Bottesford) and Jonathan Day (W Notts) shared second with 5/6 and each won £60.

The TEAM competition was shared by Ashfield and Sheffield Nomads (both 12/18) winning £8.00 each. A special prize went to the Chickens team as they all tried hard in what was their first competition.

The tournament again ran smoothly and to time, for which huge thanks are due to the team of controllers and assistants. Thanks also to the team of helpers on the refreshments stall, the school caretaker for his invaluable assistance and to the school itself for the use of its facilities.

It is hoped that the event will take place on next year at the same venue, though the date may need to be reviewed to avoid the clash which occurred this year. Finally, I hope to see as many of these competitors as possible at the 30th Nottingham Congress from Friday 13 - Sunday 15 May this year at its magnificent venue, Nottingham Forest F C (Pitchside Diner)
