I am currently researching a documentary for National Geographic International and a UK-based broadcaster called Channel Five entitled "My Brilliant Brain" about people who possess unusual cognitive talents. Our programme in the series is about Susan Polgar, and finding out how she plays chess and makes expert-level decisions.
One of the areas that we are also exploring is the how she came to succeed in what was regarded, at the time, as a male-dominated game. There is a theory that everybody fits one of five brain types and that women generally have stronger skills in empathizing and men are better at seeing patterns and systems. However, there is no definitive pattern based on gender - people will have individual talents, whatever their brain type.
We are very keen to find out if chess players share a brain type. Similar studies have been conducted on mathmaticians, architects and nurses to show if there is a common trait to these careers.
Susan has already completed the questionnaires used to determine brain type and we are now seeking volunteers who play chess to Master level or above to see if Susan is similar or different to other chess players. You can help by completing an online questionnaire.
The questionnaire is simple to complete and can be filled out online at www.cambridgepsychology.com and then clicking on 'individual registration'. You then create an account and email your username and password to me (I do not need to know anything else about you and I cannot access your profile). I will then pass this to the researchers in Cambridge so they can analyse the results.
Confidentiality is assured at all times and individual results will not be published. Please note, although the research work is sourced from the Autism Research Centre, this programme is not talking about autism in any way, nor will the results be related to autism in any way by the Centre.
I would be most grateful if you can let me know if this is something you would be interested in taking part in. Please contact me at any time via email or the numbers below. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Kind regards,
Rachel Farley
