SATURDAY 19th JANUARY 2008
BUSH HALL, Shepherds Bush, LONDON
9am to 9pm
We believe the time is right to launch a new, some may even say, radical tournament that fits into today’s busy and diverse lifestyle.
That’s why we’ve created the world’s first 20 Seconds Chess tournament sponsored by Lexmark in association with the English Chess Federation.
With £3,000 in cash prizes to be won on the day, this new and exciting one day competition will be the first of a series of brand new events for the players and supporters of Chess.
20 Seconds chess is:
The standard rules of chess apply.
However in 20 Seconds Chess the new 20/20 rule also applies.
The 20/20 rule is as follows:
1) Both players start with 20 seconds on the clock (20/20)
2) When the game commences and the clock starts, White’s clock reduces
in time and Black’s clock increases in time
3) When White has moved and pressed the clock, Blacks clock starts reduces in
time and White’s clock increases and so on.
4) If either side runs out of time...they LOSE the game.
The first and most important change is the new 20/20 rule. This completely changes the way the game is played and means that 3 games of frantic and exciting competitive chess can easily be achieved within an hour. It also makes chess far more exciting for the spectator. We also want to move away from the traditional images of chess being played in stuffy, drab, grey environments. That’s why we have decided to hold our first 20 Seconds Chess tournament at Bush Hall, which is an ornate oasis steeped in entertainment history, which has played host to the likes of Amy Winehouse, Boy George and REM. Finally we are breaking with tradition and will run the 20 Seconds Chess tournament as an OPEN DRAW. Grading is NOT relevant and means that an amateur player has a good chance of playing a top professional.
There’s also a heavy focus on the social aspect throughout the day with food and refreshments, including a fully licensed bar.
There are only 300 places available for this inaugural event and entry is open to everyone.
Entry fee £25
Prize fund
£2,000 cash for the winner
£500 cash for the runner up
£250 cash for the two losing semi finalists
