European Seniors Team Championship 2007

The 9th European Seniors Team Championship takes place in Dresden from 16-24 February. In addition to hosting teams from many European Countries this event is unusual in that regional, and even club, sides from various parts of Germany also take part. The only limitations being that all members of a team must be registered with FIDE under the same Country and that all male players must have reached the age of 60 (50 for females). This there are 53 teams competing (a record).

England will be represented by 3 teams - David Anderton (Captain), Geoff James, Tim Pelling and James Scholes make up the first team. The second team will be selected each day from a squad of 5 : Bob Wade, Michael Singleton, Alan Crombleholme, Ivor Smith and John Feavyour (Captain). The third team comprises : John Rety, Peter Wilson (Captain), Clive Pemberton and Peter Wood.

Two teams from Russia head the seedings while the third seeds are Israel. The challenge of home team Germany is led by Wolfgang Uhlmann. They are seeded fourth - just a place above Switzerland headed by Victor Korchnoi (the highest-graded individual player).

This time the event has been increased to 9 rounds. An excellent programme of excursions enables players to see the local places of interest. The February 2008 event will again be held in - you've guessed it - Dresden !

As always the hard work of recruiting players and chairing the team selection - plus sorting out hotel-bookings etc. has been done by Stewart Reuben who is now sunning himself in St. Lucia - leaving me to ensure that the teams reach Dresden safely - no doubt sporting its traditional covering of snow during this event.
