Shogi Professional Player on extended visit to England: In view of the many similarities between Chess and Shogi (Japanese Chess) some of your members may be interested to know that a distinguished professional Shogi player, Mr Honma, is currently on an extended visit to England. This is a rare opportunity. The only events that we have planned at present are primarily for the small local Shogi community, but Mr Honma is very keen to offer his expertise to the local Chess community as well. Many top chess players, including Garry Kasparov, have taken the trouble to learn Shogi, presumably with a view to improving their Chess.
I will be delighted to forward any questions or proposals to Mr Honma, who is currently staying in the London area.
With Best Regards,
David Faldon
President, British Shogi Federation

Chess Clock Repairs: We have been asked whether we know of anyone who can carry out repairs to chess clocks. Can anyone help by providing details of someone willing to carry out such repairs - especially if they have personal experience of having work carried out. If so, then would they please advise the ECF Office in the first instance. Many thanks. Peter Wilson [5/12/07]

Coulsdon Christmas International 2007: We have taken the ambitious step of deciding to run a 2nd IM norm International plus a 2nd Challengers event alongside the first ones. Needless to say, as soon as I announced the 2nd IM norm event - on the
strength that 2 more FM's had come forward - both FM's suddenly decided that they couldn't play after all, leaving me somewhat out in the cold!
In addition, a Georgian IM has stopped replying to emails and I am now concerned that her agreemnt to play may not be worth the email it was
written on; I have emailed the Georgian Federation to try and resolve it but am concerned with 2 weeks to go.
I would be pleased to hear from any players who might be interested in the events we are running. Details are at:

Miles Memorial Trophy: Soon after the death of Grandmaster Tony Miles I launched an appeal for donations so that a suitable trophy could be purchased in memory of England's first Grandmaster.
It has been difficult to determine a suitable event for the proposed trophy.
I am pleased to confirm that the "Miles Memorial Trophy" will be awarded to the Winner of The English Chess Championship - to be held for one year.
The appeal has now closed and the total raised was £350.00. This includes a little Bank Interest and a small amount of 'compensation' from the Bank [for an error on their part] in the transfer of the money to The English Chess Federation.
I would like to thank all those who made donations towards this trophy. The money is now with the ECF and David Welch (ECF Director of Home Chess) has kindly agreed to locate and purchase a suitable trophy.
I can think of no event which would have been closer to Tony's heart.

ECF Grant Puts Blind Chess on Internet [6/6/07]

Obituary: Lady Milner-Barry died on Saturday 2 June. Thelma's husband, Stuart was the first British Boys (Under-18) Champion. Later he became a very strong amateur player and was later President of the British Chess Federation. He was one of several chessplayers who contributed enormously to Intelligence at Bletchley Park in the Second World War.
Thelma was the founder Director of Women's Chess in 1986 and served in this capacity on the BCF Management Board until 1994. Initially she was regarded as a figurehead safe pair of hands in this capacity. Without her nomination, it is entirely possible that Council would never have agreed to create this important post. However, it quickly became apparent that she was a valuable member of the Board, not solely interested in her sphere of activity.
We were so lucky to have a husband and wife team, both so unfailingly polite and both so dedicated to public duty.
Our condolences to her family.

Obituary: Tony Bastable has died aged 62. His connection with chess is that he was the presenter of the first Thames Television chess programmes. He was the anchor man throughout for the 1986 World Chess Championship held in London. That sparked off a total of about 100 programmes including, in particular, The London Dockland Speed Chess Challenge between Kasparov and Short, which he also fronted. Some readers may remember him better as one of the first presenters of the children's TV series Magpie from 1968-1972. Our condolences to his family.

The 4NCL are thinking about holding a team rapidplay tournament over the weekend of 30 June - 1 July. The tournament would probably be based on teams of four players with an entry fee of around £40-50 to cover running costs, prizes etc, and would be open to all teams who wish to enter, whether or not they currently play in the 4NCL. We have provisionally booked Harben House conference centre (a member of the De Vere Venues chain which the 4NCL already uses for its weekends) near Newport Pagnell in Buckinghamshire just off the M1 and not far from Milton Keynes, which has fast rail connections to Birmingham, Manchester and London. More details on the venue can be found on www.deverevenues.co.uk.
The 4NCL would like to get an early idea of the likely level of interest for such a tournament in order that the venue booking can be confirmed, so it would be very helpful if interested teams could get in touch as soon as possible with Paul Littlewood, David Welch or Mike Truran, whose contact details can be found on www.4ncl.co.uk [20/2/07]

Discovery Channel Series: We're developing a series for the Discovery Channel celebrating Extraordinary families, and one area we're keen to explore are families who excel in a particular field. I'd be really interested in speaking to a family of exceptional chess players, who compete at national or international level.
At this stage it is just for research purposes, so it would involve an initial phone conversation.
My deadline on this is really by the beginning of next week (15th January).
Thank you in advance.

In the round of the last 16 in the World Cup Michael Adams lost with the black pieces against Magnus Carlsen. Now he must win the second game and then the playoff in order to stay in the competition.
Stewart Reuben [4/12/07]

Michael Adams won 1.5 -.5 in the third round of the World Cup against Jianchao Zhou of China. Thus he is guaranteed a payday of $25,000. In the next round he faces the wunderkind Magnus Carlssen of Norway.
Garry Kasparov was arrested for demonstrating against the current Russian government. He has now been released. It is said that while incarcerated for five days he refused all food and drink for fear of being poisoned. Anatoly Karpov tried to visit him while he was in prison but he was denied access, although he is a member of the Public Chamber.

Michael Adams qualified for the final by coming third. In the final he scored 18.5/38 to finish 11th. It was a 20 player double round.
In the World Cup in Siberia, Nigel Short did manage to play despite problems with getting a visa. Sadly he got knocked out. First he drew his two games with David Baramidze and then lost 1.5-.5 in the rpiplay play-off.
Michael Adams won 1.5-.5 against Igor Zugic. He drew the first game of the second round mini-match of two games against Mikhail Gurevich, now of Turkey, but originally from Russia and then later registered with Belgium. Michael has been one of the most consistently successful players in this 128 player event over the years, but has never actually won it.

It was good to see Vaidyanathan Ravikumar (India) making a welcome return to the British Isles. Older readers will remember that he used to be a very frequent competitor in Britain. Indeed, in 1981 he pioneered the participation of Indian players in our events.

31st World Chess Solving Championship, 16-17 October 2007, Rhodes: Great Britain scored a spectacular double success winning both the individual and team titles ... [30/10/07]

European Team Championship Crete, 27 October to 6 November.
England beat Scotland 3.5-0.5 in round 1 and lost to the Czech Republic 1.5-2.5 in round 2. We also have a women's team competing, but I was unable to access the website.
The World Cup takes place in Siberia 22 November to 16 December. Michael Adams (2729) is seeded 7 in this 128 player event and is paired against Igor Zukic (2477). Nigel Short (2644) is seeded 42 and is paired against David Baramidze (2569) Germany. The system pairs 1v128, 2v127...64v65. Thus it is a big advantage to have a high rating.
Stewart Reuben [30/10/07]

First Saturday Budapest 6-17 October. FMA 12 player all-play-all. Martyn Goodgert (2067) 4-6= 6/11. TPR 2134, +11.2 Rating points. Christopher Gibson (2032) 8-9= 5/11. TPR 1986, -7.5 Rating points.
FMB 6 player double round. Diana Mihajlova (1426) 0/10 -17 points.
Stewart Reuben [30/10/07]

We lost to South Africa in Rugby and Lewis Hamilton crashed out (figuratively speaking) in the Formula One Grand Prix. But The World Chess Problem Solving Competition in Rhodes presented a very different story. The British team, sponsored by Winton Capital Management, of Dr John Nunn, Dr Jonathan Mestel and David Friedgood won the gold medal for the third consecutive year. Their magnificent result was spearheaded by John Nunn who scored 89/90 to win the individual championships for the first time since 2004 (Mestel won that title in 1997). The team score is decided on the best two results in each round. Thus Britain scored 163/180, well ahead of Russia on 158.5 and Germany on 158. In this particular event, we play as Great Britain, rather than England or the UK and you should note that David Friedgood moved here from, ...err South Africa, nearly 30 years ago.
I have not checked with John, but I think his tally of medals of various colours in European and World events individual and team now comes to 17.
Stewart Reuben [23/10/07]

Nelson International New Zealand 3-7 October. 2-3= Murray Chandler, Stuart Conquest 7/9. This obviously has to have been the furthest Stuart has ever travelled for a chess event. For Murray it was somewhat closer as he has returned to live in NZ.
Filling out the data on the World Junior (Under 20) 2-17 October in Armenia.
Gawain Jones (2567) 8.5/13 5-9= TPR 2585, a fine result in this most prestigious of junior events, gaining 3 Rating points. David Howell (2527) 7/13 26-33= TPR 2521. Sarah Hegarty (1967) 4.5/13 52-55= TPR 1966. Thus the last two more-or-less maintained their ratings.
Roumanian Team Championships, Predeal 13-21 October. I was there as Chief Arbiter. There were no disputes of any type. I, and the excellent organiser Doru Ionescu, thought the players would be noisy, but this proved not to be so. It was easy to solve the problem of the banging and creaking doors, unlike the 4NCL. The snow provided no problems, but the days of brilliant sunshine were more difficult with the light on the boards becoming dazzling until corrected. I thought England had a variable climate!
Stewart Reuben [23/10/07]

World Juniors & Girls Championships, 2-17 October, Armenia
Congratulations to Gawain Jones who came 5th= in the World Junior Championships and David Howell who came 26th=. Sarah Hegarty also played extremely well in a tough field in the World Girls' Championship. You can see the full results on the championship website. [17/10/07]

George Trundle IM Tournament New Zealand 21-29 September. Stuart Conquest finished first with 7/9.
Most English players did not perform particularly well in the final Monarch Assurance Isle of Man Festival 22-30 September. But Jeff Horner scored what I believe is his final IM norm with 4.5/9 against a colossal 2510 field, gaining 18.6 Rating points. He exceeded the norm requirement by half a point. His first norms were achieved in the 1970s as he rarely plays internationally. Is he, at 58, the oldest player anywhere to have gained the IM title by the norm route?
The new FIDE Rating List came out on 1 October, covering events up to the end of August, although some important events, such as the World Championship, were added. Leading English players: Michael Adams 2729 (13th in the FIDE List); Nigel Short 2649 (59th); John Nunn 2602; Luke McShane 2592; Gawain Jones 2567; Mark Hebden 2542; Stuart Conquest, Murray Chandler 2540; Nicholas Pert 2539; Jonathan Parker 2527, David Howell; Daniel King 2517; Peter Wells 2515; John Emms 2503; Stewart Haslinger 2502. Women: Harriet Hunt 2448 (34th); Dagne Ciuksyte 2411; Jovanka Houska 2404; Susan Lalic 2338. You can browse through the entire list, or even download it http://fide.com/ratings/.

Simon Fowler (2204) scored 6/12 to come 8-9=. He had a Tournament Performance Rating of 2275 and gained 18 Rating points. An excellent result, probably in his first round robin, which is a more searching test than a Swiss.
FMB, a 6 player double round all-play-all. Diana Mihajlova (1429) 0/10, TPR 1044, losing 16.5 points.
1-9 September African Championship. Robert Gwaze Zambia won this event outright with 7/9. Thus he qualified for the World Cup later this year. Robert, of course, lived in England for some time.

17th European Youth Chess Championships: This event runs from 13-24 September in Croatia. 766 players from 44 countries will be competing and live games will be broadcast from the tournament website [14/9/07]

More English results have come to hand about the Barcelona Open 24 August to 2 September where there were 312 players in this 10 round Swiss.
29-52= Kemal Ozeren 6.5/10. 53-89= Thomas Eckersley-Waites, Michael White (gaining an IM norm), David Shaw, David Eggleston, Ben Savage 6. 90-128= Kieran Smallbone 5.5. 129-158+ Matthew Ludbrook 5. 159-200 Graham Burton, Christopher Duggan 4.5. Since Michael White is only 2246, his gaining an IM norm, which requires a 2450 performance, was a considerable achievement.
19 Open Porto San Giorgio Italy. 21-29 August 134 played. Gawain Jones came first with 7.5/9, gaining 17.6 Rating points. Lawrence Trent 6.5 7-13=, gaining 7.6. Thomas Rendle 6 14-30=, -5.8. Mark Lyell 5 45-65= + 4.2.

The Bratto International open from 23-31 August saw Callum Kilpatrick (2120) score 5.5/9 for a 2303 rating performance and a rating gain of 72.5 points. Daniel Hunt (1754) finished 7th in the 'B' section for players rated under 2000 and picked up nearly 70 rating points as well. [11/9/07]

Press Release - European Team Championships 2007 [7/9/07]

Cez Chess Trophy 30 August - 1 September. Nigel Short played a rapdiplay match against David Navarra. He lost 4.5-1.5 in the 'ordinary' rapidplay qand 1.5-2.5 in Fischerrandom Rapidplay. That is where the pieces are placed randomly on the back row.
Sants Open Barcelona 24 August - 2 September. Kemal Ozeren score 6.5/10 to come 29-52=. Mike White, who scored 6/10, came back with his first (9-round) IM norm.
The rating reults in the Dato Arthur Tan Mlaaysian Cup are now to hand. Murray Chanler 2540 scored 6.5/11 for a 2374 performance. Stephen Crowdy 2030 also scored 6.5/11, a 2312 performance which is outstanding.

Unfortunately the websites of neither the above events give Rating Results. They do break ties, by Bucholz or Sonneborn-Berger. Leiden (Netherlands) 23-22 July. John G Nicholson (2140) made a welcome return to form scoring 6/9 coming 4-11=, gaining 23 Rating points.
Montreal International 19-28 July. Nigel Short (2683) had a disastrous result in this very strong round robin and came last with 2/9 for a Tournament Performance Rating of 2472.
Monroi International Women's Grand Prix 21-28 July. Jovanka Houska(2401) came 2-3= in this 8 player round robin with a TPR of 2472. Had she drawn with Irina Krush, she would have had a stellar performance, finishing first equal with Pia GM Cramling. I have had no idea how they would have split such a tie, but I doubt they would have cut the diamond watch prize in half.

Jovanka Houska is doing wonderfully well in the Monroi Women's Grand Prix Final in Montreal. She has 3.5/4 in this most prestigious 8 player round robin event and has drawn with her closest rival, Pia Cramling, who has 3/4. http://www.monroi.com/GP/index.html

South Wales International in Gwent 7-12 July. 1st Dzhumaeev 8/9. 2nd Stewart Haslinger 7.5/9. 3rd Peter Wells 7/9.
Congratulations to Stewart who has now secured his third and final GM norm. He still needs to gain about 10 Rating Points but, if you look at his Rating chart http://fide.com/ratings/id.phtml?event=405248 you will see how remarkably consistent his improvement has been in the past five years.
Thus we should have three new GMs by the end of the year, David Howell, Gawain Jones and now Stewart. Simon Williams has the requisite number of norms, but is finding it difficult to reach the elusive 2500 barrier. You can find his Rating chart on http://fide.com/ratings/id.phtml?event=404454.
A likely three new GMs in one year; does this necessarily mean there is rampant inflation? Not at all, in my opinion. England is going through a particularly successful period at the moment. Whether these players will be able to reach the very highest levels is quite another matter. That is more to do with the lack of financial incentives and suitable events in this country.
Meanwhile Jovanka Houska has started well in the Monroi Women's Grand Prix, winning her first game.
Fancy playing in an exotic location. You could just fit in the Romanian International Congress after the British Championships. It takes place 11-18 August and includes: The World Amateur Championships, which started off its life in Hastings in 1995; The European Women's Rapidplay and Blitz Championships; a strong open Swiss; and a junior event. www.chess-predeal.com for details.

First Saturday Tournament Budapest 2-14 June: David Eggleston (2300) scored 7/11 to come 3-5= for a 2348 performance. These monthly events are one of only a few where players can gain much-needed experience in round robin tournaments.
Each year it is quite common for people to take a gap year with the intention of spending at least part of that time playing and improving their chess. I have a number of contacts which may be worked to your advantage. Please contact me if interested [20/6/07]

2-10 June Bosnian Team Championship: Nigel Short played board 3 for Bosna, Sarajevo, the big favourites in this team tournament. However Zeljezniear, Sarajevo won with 16 match points, but only 32.5 game points. They won the crunch match against Nigel's team who scored 15 points and 38 game points.

Candidates 26 May to 3 June in Elista: Initially Michael Adams took an early lead by beating Alexei Shirov with the black pieces. But then Alexei struck back in the sixth game to take the match into a rapidplay playoff. Alexei won both those games and thus he has gone though to the next round.
A sad end for English chess to a stirring battle that can be viewed on www.fide.com. Play continues until 14 June.

19-28 May Bosnia Sarajevo. Nigel Short (2691) came 5th of 6 with 4.5/10 in this double round tournament with a tournament performance rating of 2629. His final score was not at all bad considering he started with 0/3. In a round robin it is difficult to resist a slide to disaster after a poor start.
From 27 May Elista. Michael Adams is playing a six game match against Alexei Shirov. The winner goes forward to the last 8 and the last 4 play in Mexico for the World Championship. They have drawn the first two games of this intriguing match. A draw would be decided by armageddon. The winner will play the rising star Lev Aronian or the wunderkind, Magnus Carlssen in the second round. The former is more likely as he leads 1.5-.5. Further coverage can be found on http://globalchess.eu/main.php.

M Tel Masters, Sofia Bulgaria 9-20 May. Topalov won with 5.5/10, four of the other players scored 5/10. Unfortunately Michael Adams (2734) came last with 4.5 for a tournament performance rating of 2687. Until you look at the results chart you may think that there must have been virtually all draws, with Topalov winning the sole game against Michael. This was not how things went at all.

Anybody fancy a chessplaying holiday in Barbados?
24-28 May there is a 9 round IM norm tournament and there may be room for 1 or 2 people rated over 2300.
25-28 May there are 7 round tournaments open to FIDE Rated players. IMs free entry, accommodation and food.
Other $50, hotel $30 US per night sharing, about 3 star just across from the road from the beach.
The stinger is that, at such a late date, the air fare may be as high as £580.
Clearly this is not a jaunt for just a long weekend of chess.

Kaupthing (Reykjavik) 4-9 April. Robert Bellin (2381) won this IM round robin with 7.5/9 for a remarkable 2564 performance. Experience of playing in all-play-all events is important and I believe he played in his first in 1971. British Blind Championship 4-11 April was won by IM Colin Crouch with 7/7.  Further details on www.braillechess.org.uk. Colin's health has never fully recovered from the stroke he suffered some years ago and his sight has gradually deteriorated. Lenk (Switzerland) International Chess Festival 5-9 April. John Quinn 8-8= with 5/9. Gausdal (Norway) Chess Classic 18-26 April. Gawain Jones (2518) scored 2.5/9 for a 2373 rating performance. This may have been his first round robin and was certainly the strongest in which he had competed. In the Open: Andrew Greet came 3-6= with 6/9. John Cox 9-15= 5. Ben Savage 16-21= 4.5. Michael White 22-26= 4. Five English representatives at this hugely enjoyable event is not unusual. Beware! The luncheon smorgasbord before play can be a killer if you have any aspirations. FIDE have charged Nigel Short with bringing the game into disrepute over his comments, in an Indian Newspaper in January, on Deputy President Makropoulos and Vice President Azmayparashvili. More details can be found in from Malcolm Pein's note in Monday's Daily Telegraph. Nigel Short's comments stem from unfortunate problems at the last two World Championship events. One would have thought that FIDE would wish to try to draw a line under these problems, rather than stirring matters up again.

Sydney International 10-14 April: Simon Ansell and Murray Chandler came 15-29= with 6/9. Gary Lane, who defected to Australia some years ago came 6-9= with 7/9. He also did well in the Doeberl Cup 6-9 April, finishing 2-4= with 5.5/7. There are several English players playing in a decidedly cooler climate in Reykjavik 11-19 April. Gawain Jones is playing in the Gausdal Classic in Norway 18-26 April. The average rating of his opponents in this prestigious round robin is 2541 so that the GM norm is 5.5/9.

8th United Insurance & United Leasing Grandmasters Tournament: Organised by the Bangladesh Chess Federation, from 6 to 14 May 2007 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. They will provide 500 (Five hundred) US dollars to grandmasters as appearance money and free food and accommodation both of them during the event. [4/4/07]

Little action by English players this week, but many are starting play in the European Championship today.
The April FIDE Rating list is out with commendable dispatch. No doubt there are errors, but these are usually clarified in due course. Sadly the GibTelecom Masters failed to get sent in by the final date.
Of our active players: Michael Adams 2734. He would have lost 1 point if the event had been rated. He is number 10 in the world list. Nigel Short 2694. He has been inactive this year so far and is number 24. Luke McShane 2615. All his games are in the Bundesliga, which will not be rated until the end of the season. Stuart Conquest 2546, Jon Speelman 2529, Daniel King 2528, Nick Pert 2525, Jonathan Parker 2521, Mark Hebden 2519, Danny Gormally, David Howell, Gawain Jones all 2518. Nigel Davies 2501.
As so often Stuart and Mark were our most active players in this period. Gawain's rating continues to rise, although the GM norm continues to evade him. He still needs a 10 round norm, or two 9 round norms.
To help you understand title norm opportunities in the European Championship, you need to understand that any norm of 9 rounds or more counts as if one of 20 rounds in this highly prestigious tournament.

8th Internet Chess Tournament Ciudad de Hos Hermanos 16-24 March on ICC. There were more than 2000 entries. Keith Arkell, with the handle Neveris, lost in the round of the last 32 1.5 to 2.5 to Zhang Zhong. His prize money was 100 Euro.

26 February to 6 March Trophee Universitaire in Roche sur Yon France. Jovanka Houska (2384) finished 8-9= and scored 3.5/9 in this round robin. That may not seem very good, but it was very strong and her Performance Rating was 2438.
Capelle La Grande 3-10 March attracted 608 players, but surprisingly none were English. Most years English representation has been about 15.
International La Laguna Tenerife 5-11 March. Gawain Jones came 1-4= with Kolev, Kurajica and Mchedishvili all 7/9. David Eggleston 5/9.
Stewart Reuben [14/3/07]

Glenn Flear played in the 4th Balogne Open in Calvi 26 February to 2 March. He came 4-9= with 5/7 for a 2419 performance.
Most English players were playing in the 4NCL, but Jovanka Houska is doing well in an event with an interesting line-up in France. More of that next week.

GibTelecom Chess Festival 23 January to 4 February: Updating Peter Wilson's valuable comments on the success of Thomas Rendle in achieving his first GM norm. Thomas finished 5-17= with 6.5/9 in the 176 player GibTelecom Masters, tying with such luminaries as Michael Adams. His prize money was not for his place prize. Instead he received £2000 for his gain of 26.9 rating points.
Jovanka Houska won £1000 in the same rating category 2400-2499. She gained 15.4 points, but this is multiplied by 1.5 as she is under 2400. Thus the actual gain was 23.4 and this takes her above 2400 for the first time. More important was that her score of 6/9 resulted in her finishing first equal with Antoaneta Stefanova (past Women's World Champion) for the Women's Prizes. This netted her a further £3000. The GibTelecom Masters was the inaugural event of the Monroi Women's International Grand Prix and thus they head the leader board of this important new venture. Is Jovanka considering becoming a tax exile in Gibraltar?
There were 76 tournament entries from English players in Gibraltar, setting aside the fact that Gibraltar players are also listed as England. Full details of all their results and all the games can be found on www.gibraltarchesscongress.com, the webmaster of which is Sean Hewitt.

20-year old Warwick University Student - Thomas Rendle (2366), from Hastings, drew his last round game against Mikhail Gurevich (2635), of Turkey, in the Gibtelecom Masters Tournament organised by Stewart Reuben. This gave Thomas his first Grandmaster Title Norm. Needing a draw from his round 9 game - Thomas and his opponent played on until each had only King and Rook each. He scored six and a half points from his 9 games. This is an excellent result for Thomas who obtained his International Master Title during a "Gap year" before resuming his studies. [2/2/07]

In the Rilton Cup Competition held in Stockholm from 27th December, 2006 to 5th January, 2007 16-year-old David Howell secured his third and final Grandmaster Norm. His score of 7 points from 9 games (6 wins, 2 draws and one loss) took him to equal 2nd to 5th places. It only remains for the World Chess Federation Presidential Board to ratify David's GM Title at their meeting later this month. Stewart Reuben has already taken action which should ensure that this is on their agenda. The only other English (or even British) competitor in this competition was Tobias Stock (FIDE rating 2075) who scored 4 points from his 9 games. As always it is good to see English players taking part in International Tournaments abroad.
