Thanks to all the participants at the 9th Chess Holiday held at Rothay Manor Hotel Ambleside, nestled in the heart of the Lake District, from March 19th to 24th 2017.
New coach Winston Williams kicked off the programme by giving a simultaneous display. The hotel management remarked that they were suitably impressed as it was the first time the coach went through the exhibition without losing a single game. In the mornings during the week, Winston delivered four tutorial sessions on opening, middlegame and endgame strategies and tactics.
The Standardplay tournament was won this year by Kevin Simpson from Mansfield with a full 5 points out of 5 games. Runner-up was John Vaughan, Sutton on 4/5; joint third place went to Rupert Guinness, King’s Lynn and Colin Thompson, Calne on 2.5/5. Special awards also went to Robert Wardle, Nottingham as the Life of the Party and to Eileen Finn, Newcastle as the Rose among the Thorns.
The Rapidplay tournament was also won by Kevin, followed by Rupert, Colin and John respectively.
The hotel continued to live up to its reputation in providing splendid accommodation, service and cuisine within the comforts of its relaxed setting by the shores of Lake Windermere.
It will be hosting the 10th Chess Holiday from March 4th to 9th 2018.
