A dinner at Simpsons in the Strand on Tuesday 12th December marked the formal end of the 2017 London Chess Classic. As well as the prize-giving, the event was also a fundraiser for Chess in Schools and Communities.
Six-time World Snooker Champion (and erstwhile ECF President) Steve Davis, one of the guests for the evening, generously donated a one-hour snooker lesson to be auctioned for the benefit of CSC. The winning bid came from none other than Sergei Karjakin. Steve and Sergei are planning their chess-snooker showdown in April next year.
The evening opened with video reports on the Pro-Biz and CSC’s Schools’ Chess Festival. 1861 children from over 100 schools visited Olympia, winning 21 trophies and 274 medals between them. As well as their tournaments, chess lessons and the Chris & Lawrence show, everyone who came along went home with a goody bag containing a pocket chess set and chess memorabilia.
