3rd Big Slick International 22-30 June 2013

Congratulations to eighteen-year-old Yang-Fan Zhou (above, left) who won the 3rd Big Slick International GM norm section with a score of 7/9 and recorded his first GM (grandmaster) norm; and to sixteen-year-old Alan Merry (above, right) who won the IM section with 7.5/9 and made his first IM (International Master) norm. Alex Longson also increased his rating to 2300 and therefore qualifies for his FM (FIDE Master) title.

My thanks to the Big Slick Poker Club in Purley for generously supplying the tournament with a free venue, The John Robinson Trust for paying the entry fees of the players under 21 and The Friends of Chess for their generous financial support. I would also like to thank the arbiter David Sedgwick, all the players for creating such a sporting atmosphere, my co-organiser Simon Williams and finally Sabrina Chevannes for her support including finding time to organise and jointly win the first Big Slick blitz with GM Keith Arkell and Alex Longson!
