Endgame Challenge Three – The Rerun

The ECF is scheduling a second run of the very successful Endgame Challenge Three to take place on the evenings of Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd February 2023 with IM Lorin D’Costa (below right) and GM Keith Arkell (below left). This will follow the format of previous one-day challenges and will focus on Rook and Pawn Endings, with theoretical positions and practical examples.

The challenge will be in two parts —

Wednesday 22nd February 6.30pm to 9.00pm – Rook and Pawn Endings
Zoom lecture on rook and pawn endings, including thematic tournaments and analysis of games with IM Lorin D’Costa, supported by GM Keith Arkell

Pawn endings recap – the square, the opposition, shouldering, pawns on both sides, passed pawns, breakthrough, fortresses.
Rook and pawn fundamentals – Lucena, Philidor, side defence, Vancura, and others.
Practical examples – pawn hierarchy, staying active, targeting weaknesses, attacking and defensive techniques in different situations.

Lectures and coaching will be supported by thematic tournaments with GM Keith Arkell, with positions based on practical examples from top level play. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions during the sessions with a general Q & A session at the end of the afternoon.

Thursday 23rd February from 6.30pm onwards – ‘Arkell’s Endings’ Simul
GM Keith Arkell will host an online simul with games taken through to endings wherever possible. This will provide entrants with an opportunity to test their endgame knowledge and skills against a top grandmaster and endgames expert.

All attendees will receive a pack by email with a summary of the material covered following on from the challenge. Space will be limited so do enter now if you are interested in improving your endgame play. Tickets are £10.00
