English Seniors Championships


When – Thursday April 30th to Sunday May 3rd 2020
Where – Holiday Inn Kenilworth-Warwick, 212 Abbey End, Kenilworth CV8 1ED
Eligibility – Over 50 – Players must be aged 50 or over on 31st December 2020; Over 65 – Players must be aged 65 or over on 31st December 2020. Players must be born in England or have lived in England for at least the preceding 12 months. In addition if they have a FIDE registration, it must be ENG.
Format – FIDE-rated Over 65; FIDE-rated Over 50. The congress will have a total of seven rounds over 4 days, with playing schedule as follows – Thursday Round 1 15.00 – 19.00; Friday Round 2 10.00 – 14:00; Round 3 15:00 – 19:00; Saturday Round 4 10:00 – 14:00; Round 5 15:00 – 19:00; Sunday Round 6 10:00 – 14:00 Round 7 15:00 – 19:00. Players may take half-point byes in any round apart from Round 7 – up to two half point byes can be requested.
Time control – All moves in 90 minutes plus 30 second increment per move from move 1
Entry fees – £45.00 (players must have Gold or Platinum ECF membership or pay a surcharge of £11)
Early Bird discount – entries received before 1st March will receive a £5 discount. No entries taken after Wednesday 29th April.
Grading/rating – both sections will be FIDE-rated and ECF graded
Prizes (in both sections) – 1st £200; 2nd £150; 3rd £100; Under 2000 prize £50, Under 1800 prize £50 plus a Seniors Championship trophy for the winner of each section

No player may win more than one prize. Ungraded players cannot win a grading prize. Players with only an ECF grade will for the purposes of the U2000 or U1800 prizes have an estimated FIDE rating calculated as 7.5 x ECF + 700 = FIDE. In the event of a tie for first place in either section, the award of the championship trophy and the title of Over 50/Over 65 champion will be decided by a tie break. The following methods will be applied in this order  —

Note that the prize money will be divided equally amongst the players tied for first place. The organisers reserve the right to reduce the prize fund in the event of bad weather adversely affecting the number of entries. Prizes will be paid by BACS after the conclusion of the event.
The Organiser reserves the right to refuse an entry for any reason.
Players failing to arrive in the playing area within 30 minutes of the start for each round will be defaulted. Players whose opponents default will be offered a repairing if possible.

FIDE ratings used will be from the 1st April FIDE rating list. ECF gradings used will be from the January 2020 list. Players who are ungraded must provide the organiser with details of their strength.
Only refreshments obtained at the hotel may be consumed on the premises.

The 2019 English Seniors Congress was very successful, with highly positive feedback from the players who took part over the four days.

The outright English 50+ section winner and English champion for 2019/2020 is IM Paul Littlewood, with 5.5 points out of 6. CM Rob Willmoth and Mark Josse came equal second with 4.5 points out of 6.

The outright English 65+ section winner and English champion for 2019/2020 is Kevin Bowmer with 5.5 points out of 6. Chris Shephard came second with 5 points and Mike Surtees and CM David Anderton came equal third with 4.5 points.
