Jim Hoskins 9th March 1937 – 7th December 2019 – this is a tribute to Jim’s interest in Junior Chess for children at Primary School
Jim assisted the chess clubs at Polehampton Junior School in Twyford, St. Nicholas Junior School in Hurst and Caversham Primary School. He would also attend weekend tournaments and matches when children from these schools were participating. Although he was keen to help, the schools didn’t always manage to keep their clubs going, and it was when Caversham Primary School stopped their chess club that he decided to start a junior chess club himself. Initially he tried to set this up in Caversham, but he soon found that Radstock Community Centre in Earley was a good venue, and there were children from this area interested in attending. He continued to attend weekend events when children from his club were participating
A year ago, his illness prevented him from running the club. The club kept going and he came along when he could. The last time he attended the club, which had now moved to Maiden Place also in Earley, was in October. Unfortunately, it was the half term week and he found the club was closed.
Jim was pleased to be made Honorary Chairman of the Earley Junior Chess Club. He will be remembered as the person who started the Club. Thanks to Jim for that.
