On Monday 18th April, Drunken Knights play Wood Green in the Division 1 Championship decider at the Plough. The biggest match in DK history, against the team that have all but dominated the London League for more than a decade. The Wood Green payroll is expected to include no fewer than eight GMs, making them heavy pre-match favourites.
During the mid- to late-Eighties, one man dominated World Heavyweight Boxing. Nicknamed ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’, Mike Tyson had so fearsome a reputation that opponents often seemed defeated before even stepping into the ring. Boxing pundits and fans alike considered him practically unbeatable, his explosive combination of hand speed and punching power simply destroyed anyone stood before him (http://tinyurl.com/dk-tyson1)
In February 1990, Tyson fought a title defence against James ‘Buster’ Douglas, a rank outsider priced at an incredible 42/1. The fight took place in Tokyo, since none of the traditional Las Vegas or Atlantic City venues were interested in hosting such a huge mismatch. However, Douglas had not read the script, and in the tenth round crowned an inspired performance for what has been described one of the most shocking upsets in modern sports history (http://tinyurl.com/dk-tyson3)
Thus ends a cautionary tale – suffice to say that this meeting will feature the strongest ever DK team, twelve seasoned players with more than a puncher’s chance against tougher opposition. This match is set to become the highest ever ECF rated bout played in the London League (Instituted 1887)
Drinking supporters welcome!
