… on Sunday, 17th April 2016 – from Roy and Ayelet Uriely
|Breaking news! Grandmaster Matthew Sadler has entered this event!|
To mark our beloved Michael’s 10th birthday, we look forward to bringing together Michael’s greatest passions: the company of his friends, chess and sport.
Teaming up with Michael’s School, Westminster Under, and the Charity, Asthma UK, we will be hosting a chess tournament in Michael’s memory on Sunday, 17th April 2016, in Central London, at Westminster Under School, 27 Vincent Square, London SW1P 2NN
Whilst chess will be at the centre of the day, you don’t need to be a chess master to enjoy it! The tournament will be split into three sections, designed to cater for all levels, children and adults alike; whether you are a boy or girl who only recently learned the moves, a parent, a school teacher, a chess coach, an experienced player who has been playing regularly in tournaments for a while or indeed a Grand Master, or anything in between, you are very welcome and encouraged to come and take part.
The three sections are:
I. non-graded players / up to 80 ECF;
II. 81-130 ECF Grade or FIDE equivalent; and
III. above 130 / an Open section – where current and former chess professionals and chess coaches will take part.
There will be 5 rounds of rapid play games (time control is 25 minutes per player per game); All players will play in all games – it is not a knock-out competition. In order to keep the day fun and stress-free, the games will not be graded for ECF or FIDE.
We are very honoured that Prize Giving will be presented by Mr. Dominic Lawson, a distinguished journalist and the President of The English Chess Federation – as well as a Westminster School Alumnus.
Alongside the individual Chess Tournament we will also run a “5-a-side” Fantasy Chess League. Every five players can join up to create their own dream team, and the aggregate results of the team members’ chess games (1 point for a win and 1/2 point for a draw) will be added up to provide the team’s score; the teams will be ranked in a league based on the total number of points achieved over the 5 rounds.
During the registration process you can provide the details of your team, or you can simply indicate that you wish to join a team and we will find one for you.
And to complete the sports theme, the players are welcome to dress up in their favourite sport kit.
And a bit more …
In between the rounds we will have a few extra features, including short and thought-provoking talks about chess and non-chess related subjects and a chess-themed general knowledge quiz.
The winners and runners up in each section will receive a monetary prize (1st – £75; 2nd – £50) and there will also be prizes for additional categories, such as the best youngest in each category and more.
Most excitingly, there will be a number of prizes “in kind” reflecting activities that Michael enjoyed and was passionate about, including a pair of tickets to Chelsea’s last game of the season against Leicester City, a luxury Chess set, a voucher for Michael’s favourite Sushi Restaurant chain, free private Chess lessons and some more exciting surprises!
