Rod was born in Australia and immigrated to England. He was a music and film journalist. He was best known to the chess community as the father of Luke McShane, who was a chess prodigy, winning the World U10 at the age of 8. He would have been eligible for two more years. Of course Rod spent a long time with Luke at chess events in his youth, and as with many such parents, Rod became an active chess administrator. He became a very valuable International Chess Arbiter in 1999.
As Luke matured and after, Rod moved to Folkestone, and his interest in chess waned – but his robust opinions and hard work will be long remembered …
