— Andrew Martin, ECF Manager of Schools Chess

As Headmistress of St. Catherine’s, and also on behalf of my colleague Naomi Bartholomew, Headmistress of our Preparatory School, can I thank you all for making the journey today if you managed to do so. The girls were a great credit to themselves and their schools and I would be grateful if this could be passed back to our head teacher colleagues for the appropriate mentions in Assemblies or pats on the back, whatever is your local custom. The focus of the young people was very special. A joy to behold. And a huge thank you to the teams of parents and coaches from us, too. The support and encouragement was wonderful to see, as too were the occasional little moments of consolation and discussion of tips and tactics for next time. There is so much to learn in chess. Final thanks go to the ECF and to Andrew Martin for making this all happen, and to our home team of staff who were delighted to welcome you all. I do hope you all have a safe journey home – some I am sure are still travelling and will be late into the evening. What a great day for girls’ chess.

— Alice Phillips and Naomi Bartholomew, Head of Senior School and Head of Prep School at St. Catherine’s, Bramley
