Profile of Stewart Reuben – Director of Marketing
I learnt chess at the age of 11 when I went to grammar school. This was normal in that period; what was not normal was the high regard with which chess was regarded at William Ellis. I didn’t become an organiser until I was 14 (why such a late developer?) in 1953. I then took over running the lunchtime school chess club and was also appointed captain of Islington (adult) Club Second Team. We lost to the 1st team, but still managed to finish ahead of them, a feat which took me 49 years to duplicate in the European Senior Team Championship.
I continued in education and employment, including two years in New York. On my return from there I started the Islington Congress in 1965. This was the first weekend congress in Britain other than over a holiday weekend. It attracted 24 entries. By 1971 484 players took part and it had been imitated all over Britain. Thus we were ready for the explosion that was to follow in 1972 due to the publicity from the Fischer-Spassky match. That year the Evening Standard Islington Congress had 1204 players and the following year 1508. It was in 1973 that I introduced quickplay finishes, a way of concluding the game which much later became the worldwide standard. Much later Islington chess became non-viable and is, alas, no more either as a club or congress.
I ran my first international tournament in 1973, again sponsored by the Evening Standard. Leonard Barden and I introduced the Cutty Sark Grand Prix in 1974 and it still runs, in a somewhat attenuated form, today. But the Lloyds Bank Masters of 1977 was the event with which I am associated which has had most influence. It was shown that people can gain title norms in an open Swiss
In 1978 the BCF changed its management structure from one being run by a huge committee to having directors. Also David Anderton became President. I realised that it would be possible to work with the BCF now and joined the Board in 1979 as London League representative. In 1980 we held the Phillips & Drew/GLC Kings and were able to repeat the event in 1982, 84 and 86, the latter sponsored solely by the Greater London Council. These were among the major events of their time in the world. We also ran the World Championship in 1986.
I took over the British Chess Championships in January 1981 and ran the event until 1997. By that time, I was also Chairman of the Federation and edited ChessMoves for a period. In 2008 I again ran the British Championships. I also did the preparatory work for 2009, but my health broke down and fortunately Alex McFarland and David Welch stepped in to the gap at virtually the last minute. We are fortunate that they have agreed to run the event in 2010.
My major new event this century has been the Gibtelecom Chess Festival in Gibraltar. This is now one of the richest open events in the world and comes under the ECF as Gibraltar cannot affiliate to FIDE directly.
I am author of the only book on chess organisation in English, ‘The Chess Organiser’s Handbook’. I have been secretary of the FIDE Rules and Title Regulations Committee since 1995 and, since their reorganisation, am Secretary of Qualification Commission and a Councillor of the Events Commission. I was the ECF International Director from 2001-4 and also 2008-9.
At my best I was about 205, 2270 playing strength. I strongly believe chess administrators are better for having some understanding of the strain of competitive chess.
But what does all this have to do with marketing? That is a field which is like a river running through all our activities. I have always believed the best way to get people into chess is to provide activities which I would enjoy. My intention is to build a team and find a successor by, at the latest, October 2011.
- Stewart Reuben, author of:
The Chess Scene with David Levy
London 1980 with Bill Hartston
Chess Openings – Your Choice! (this 1985 book was recently reprinted so as to be a part of the Chess for Schools package)
The Chess Organiser’s Handbook
Also several books on poker
Profile of Peter Purland – Director of Junior Chess and Education
I have taken over as Director of Junior Chess and would like to thank Claire for all the effort she has put in over the last couple of years. Although we all have our own ideas and styles she has been a great worker for the furtherance of the junior game.
I learnt chess at the aged of 9 – from my father – and one of my primary school teachers was Noel Waugh, the first treasurer of the English Primary Schools Chess Association. I played for Vaughan Road Primary, Oldershaw Grammar School and St David’s College Lampeter. I even took part in the Liverpool Junior Congress as early as 1956. On getting a teaching job at Liverpool College I continued with my involvement and soon joined the EPSCA committee holding most jobs on it. At present I am chief arbiter and an U11 selector. I still play in the Merseyside League when time permits although Tuesdays (Club night now) I have a 40 year old commitment! Perhaps I shall find another club. As a secondary teacher I then became involved in the National Chess Junior Squad and am a trustee of the charity and also chairman. I have organised and taken many foreign trips for the squad as well as Rugby, History and Boys Brigade trips for other organisations.
Probably my main chess involvement is arbiting—being a FIDE arbiter and chief arbiter of Wales. I do junior, adult weekend and international events throughout Europe and have even run a junior tournament in South Africa. I have been involved with the Gibraltar Chess Festival since its inception and am in charge of developing junior chess there.
I am looking forward to the challenge of continuing the development of junior chess in England and hope to outline my ideas in a later issue of The Right Move magazine. The one thing I would say is that I fervently believe in players proving their credentials by playing and beating other players of the same age group. I would like to see the British Championships this summer won by the best English player in that age group. Please do enter your own age group for the relevant week, and by all means experiment in the other! I will try to make myself as available as possible at events so please do come and meet me and give me input in to my new job.
Profile of Lawrence Cooper – Director of International Chess
Lawrence became Director of International Chess for The English Chess Federation in October 2009 after performing the role of Alternate Director to his predecessor Stewart Reuben in the previous twelve months.
He is based in Staffordshire and has been a self employed chess coach since February 2008 after taking redundancy from his civil service job. He is an ECF accredited coach and has CRB clearance. He coached at both the 2007 & 2008 Glorney & Faber Cups and was the English coach at The 2008 World Junior in Turkey in August 2008. He was also one of the England coaches at the 2009 World Youth. His best known pupil is Thomas Pym whom he coached for seven years.
As a player he achieved the title of International Master in 2000 and has 30 years of playing experience both nationally and internationally. He represented England at The Mind Sport Games in Beijing in October 2008 before being part of an English tour of South Africa in December 2008.
As an organiser he has co-organised 3 International Tournaments, 4 British Blitz events and captained Midland Monarchs to two 4NCL titles in the 1990s and recently captained Hilsmark Kingfisher to the Division Two title and twice took them to the European Club Cup after qualifying by finishing sixth and then third in the top division. He also captained NACCPO (National Alliance of Childhood Cancer Parents Organisation) to first place in the 2008 4NCL Rapid Play Tournament and raises money for the charity through simultaneous displays.
Most recently, Lawrence was captain of the England mens (open) team at the 2009 European Team Championship where the team finished 12th after being seeded 18th out of 38 teams.
Profile of Adam Raoof – Director of Home Chess
My first experiences in chess were working on the bulletin for the British Championships in Brighton 1984, then with the great Bob Wade and Les Blackstock on the bulletin for the 1986 Dubai Olympiad. I was a freelance proofreader for chess and bridge publishers and even did a short spell as Chess Editor for Batsford. I was introduced to organising tournaments by the late J. Glynn Jones of Hertfordshire and never looked back.
Though I am a Londoner, I have sought to organise events as far and wide as possible; running events in England (Rotherham, Agency International Covent Garden, UCL Hampstead, York Vikings, Drury Lane, Manchester, Newcastle, Staffordshire Millennium Festival), Scotland (Edinburgh) and Wales (Newport and Cardiff, continued with success by Kevin Staveley) and I am still open to offers, N. Ireland and Eire! I play and have contacts in many other countries. I have always tried to promote events which enable our young and talented players to achieve their potential, with some success.
Other events;
A series of challenge matches involving Jonathan Rowson, Tiger Hillarp-Persson, Luke McShane, Michael Adams, Danny Gormally, Matthew Turner.
London vs Beijing Challenge Match
I was a director of the 4NCL during the 90s and greatly enjoyed the challenges faced during that period of growth.
I organised the 1st ChessMaster British Blitz Championship in 1999.
I captained the England Olympiad Team in Istanbul 2000 (a non-playing role!).
Very proud to have co-organised and played in the very first International Chess Tournament to be held in South Korea in Ilsan Chess Club, Seoul 2006.
Even more proud to have been the Deputy Editor of the British Chess Magazine in 1996-1997.
I was born in Hertfordshire, raised in Kent and live in Middlesex and have played county chess for all three.
I organised weekend congresses at International Students House, Imperial College. Now my organising is ‘confined’ to Golders Green Rapidplay every month (we regularly get 80-100 entries) and the occasional large event such as the London Chess Classic (www.londonchessclassic.com).
OUTSIDE CHESS
Outside of chess I did a BA and then an MA in Creative Writing at Middlesex University in NW London, and worked in various public-facing roles until recent restructuring. Now I work as an administrator, with more time on my hands to get involved with chess. My main hobbies include gardening and Scrabble.
