Mixed Pairs Tournament in Chengdu, China.

Postby Nigel Short » 06 Jul 2014, 02:03

I am about to start playing in a 5 round, mixed pairs tournament in Chengdu, China - a village of around 14 million people. My "dance" partner is Hou Yifan. There is no website, so I will try and keep people updated here. I would normally do it via Twitter or my Facebook fan page but, this being China, they are both blocked. The (Sechuan) food at the banquet last night was superb, by the way - even though I was breathing fire afterwards. The hotel isn't too shabby either.

Hou Yifan and I defeated Artur Yusupov and Maya Chiburdanidze today. The men made the odd moves, the ladies the evens.

Despite this supposedly being a mixed pairs tournament, today we faced two women - the former World Champion, Xie Jun and the nine-times Chinese Women's Champion, and local player, Liu Shilan. Xie Jun is an honorary man for the purposes of this event, and therefore, according to the rules of the tournament, she moved first. The game followed David Howell-Nigel Short, 4NCL 2012, up until move 8, when my partner varied with ...Qb6!? We were pretty pleased with our effort, despite the computer showing that we missed one important, but difficult, opportunity on move 11 involving ...cxd4 and 12...f5!!

The games are now on Chess Arena

http://www.chessdom.com/33912/

The event is played in a 5-round format.

The teams are paired as follows:

GM Nigel Short & GM Hou Yifan,
GM Yasser Seirawan & GM Zhou Chen
GM Artur Jussupow & GM Maia Chiburdanidze
GM Ye Jiangchuan & IM Alisa Maric
GM Yu Shaoteng, GM Xu Yuhua
GM Xie Jun & WGM Liu Shilan

The official web site is in Chinese so I've just focused on the pretty pictures.

And people still wonder about popularity of chess among women and girls: "if you are doing really really well, one day, you might become an honorary men" :-)

Hou Yifan and I finished 3rd, with a score of 3.5/5. Basically we blew it yesterday with a collective collapse of concentration against Yasser Seirawan and Zhu Chen, turning a clearly better position into a dead lost one in the space of about two minutes (and half a dozen moves). In such a short event, you can not afford to lose key games like that. Here are the moves of our last round effort, which hopefully some kind person will transform so that it can be played through.
