David was a strong junior chess player. He regularly represented Lancashire Juniors and was 4th in the British Boys Under-16 Championship (Bath, 1963). In 1967 he was captain of the Oxford University team. Having just recently taken up chess again, David played in the British Seniors Championship in Sheffield last year and recently was joint winner of the British Championship (Under 180) at North Shields.
He worked mainly in the Automotive Industry, firstly with Volvo UK as Operations Director and then in the retail sector, including ten years as Managing Director of Lex Retail Group (£200m turnover) and Motorway Tyres (£70m turnover). From 1996 he worked as a self-employed Management Consultant, focusing mainly on Logistics, Management Coaching and Major Change Programmes.
David knows what it’s like to develop and play at the very top of a sport. He was a regular member of the Great Britain croquet team between 1979 and 2002. He captained the team that won the World Championship in 1982, 1990, 1993 and 2000. On an individual basis he was British Open Champion in 1979, 1981 and 1985, World Champion (One Ball) in 1982, and Silver Medallist in the 1991 World Championship.
He was a Council Member of the English Croquet Association from 1982 to 1986 and from 1998 to 2010 and President of the World Croquet Federation 2003 to 2009.
His other interests are golf, supporting Burnley football team, the theatre and being a good Grandad.
David says ‘I am very pleased to become the International Director of the ECF, and look forward to working with the ECF Board for the benefit of English Chess. I would like to see the English teams improve their relative position in the chess world. I want to ensure we have strong elite development programmes for our top players. I also want to ensure we have the means so that our very best players are able to play in key international events. To do this we are likely to need commercial partners to support the English teams. I will be working hard, with I hope many others, to achieve these aims.
My first actions will be to talk to our top players and ex-players to understand their needs, and to start to develop a network of people who can help us find commercial partners. If you can help please contact me.’
